SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Authorities Friday imposed restrictions in old parts of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir following violent protests inside central jail, officials said.
The restrictions were being enforced by hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel deployed in the area. The government force personnel have erected barricades at several places to restrict the movement of people.
"The restrictions have been imposed in parts of Srinagar's old city including Nowhatta where historic grand mosque (Jamia Masjid) is located," a police official said. "The move has been taken as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order."
On Thursday night violent protests broke inside the central jail Srinagar.
A local news gathering agency quoted region's police chief as saying clashes broke out after some inmates instigated others to stop the repair and reinforcement works inside the jail. However, reports said rumours of prisoners being shifted outside triggered protests.
Reports said two inmates were wounded in the violent clashes and three barracks and a building suffered damages inside the fortified central jail, located in old city.
The authorities have suspended and reduced internet speed in Srinagar and other districts to prevent activity on social media networking sites.
A guerilla war challenging New Delhi's rule is going on in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989.
Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their Independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
