ISTANBUL, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his latest remarks about annexing the West Bank settlements if he wins another term.

"Everything the country has been doing is against international law and the resolutions of the United Nations," Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul before departing for Russia.

"The West Bank belongs to the Palestinians," Erdogan said, noting Turkey will stand by Palestine.

Netanyahu told an Israeli TV channel on Saturday that he would start extending Israeli sovereignty to the West Bank settlements if getting re-elected in the elections on Tuesday.

Israel seized the West Bank in the 1967 war and has been building settlements there which housed about 435,000 Israeli settlers by 2017, according to official Israeli figures.

The Palestinians are seeking to establish an independent state on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as the capital, though East Jerusalem has been under Israeli occupation as well.
