Fiat Chrysler recalls over 270,000 Ram trucks in U.S.

CHICAGO, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling 270,254 older Ram pickup trucks in the U.S market, as the fuel tank may sag.

The recall includes certain 2009-2012 Ram 1500 pickups registered in the District of Columbia and 20 states that live within the so-called salt belt.

In the salt belt, salt is used to clear snow and ice from the road during winter, which is also accelerating corrosion on the metal surface of cars. A fuel tank bracket may corrode and fail, which would cause the truck's fuel tank to sag.

FCA said in a Thursday statement that it has received no reports of accidents, fires, fuel leaks or injuries related to this issue.

FCA also mentioned this is a voluntary recall, which means FCA made the decision to issue the recall without being compelled to do so by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Reinforcing the bracket or replacing strap is likely the solution. For now, affected customers will receive recall notifications via first-class mail. If owners see sagging fuel tanks or hear noises out back, FCA advises owners to call a local dealership.
